This document describes how to use the JACK Audio Mastering interface (JAMin). JAMin is used for doing professional mastering of stereo digital audio. Normally this program is used in conjunction with Ardour, alsaplayer, ecamegapedal, or other JACK enabled multitrack or stereo recording/playing programs. Mastering, in the context of JAMin, mostly consists of dynamics processing, that is, we want to achieve the best overall balance of dynamics and volume level for the type of music that we are working with. To this end we will use the EQs, multiband compression, input gain, output gain, and boost to maximize our sound levels without destroying the dynamic mix of the music. In addition we may also adjust the "space" of the music using the stereo width and balance controls. This document will attempt to detail the use of JAMin to modify these effects. For in-depth discussions on how to use each of the effects to achieve a particular "sound" you should look at Ron Parker's mastering documentation (TBD).
The JAMin developers are Steve Harris, Patrick Shirkey, Jan Depner, and
Jack O'Quin. Ron Parker is the principal documentation producer. Many other
people have contributed to the design/debug phase. Two that immediately
spring to mind are Alexandre Prokoudine and Mark Knecht.
In addition to the people who are directly involved with
JAMin I'd like to acknowledge the open source packages upon which JAMin is
built. JAMin would not be functional without these:
Many thanks to all of the authors of these packages! I'd also like
to thank Paul Davis (and a host of others) for the best multitrack recorder
around, Ardour. While JAMin is
not built on Ardour, Ardour is, as you'll see later, the best source and sink
for audio data to and from JAMin. Working with Ardour is how I got
involved with JAMin in the first place (that's right, it's all Paul's fault).
The latest version can be found on the JAMin home page (http://jamin.sourceforge.net/).

If you like this or hate it or are indifferent or want to make corrections or are going to the Virgin Islands on vacation and would just like to take me along all expenses paid drop me a line at and I'll take the appropriate action (let's see...suntan lotion, sunglasses...).
